Retired – ish

Today I had a big surprise at work.  I sort of knew that something was being organised as a few folks at work had indicated they’ll be meeting me for lunch.  I figured it would just be a get together in a meeting room.  My manager had suggested one or two of us go for a meal at lunch.  I thought this was a ruse to make sure I was around at the right time.  But in the end we did go out and there were a whole bunch of people waiting for us – including Helen.  They had managed to get hold of her and have her join.  That made the surprise all the more special – for both of us.  I really had no idea.  So we had a nice Italian.  There were some speeches and some gifts – all very nice.  They included a great nautical clock which we’ll mount on Dignity somewhere special.

So – now that we’ve had the goodbyes and the speeches I still have two days left at work.  Officially.  Practically I have cleared my desk both figuratively and metaphorically.  I’ve actually agreed to stay in touch for longer than Tuesday in case there are any questions and to provide continued mentoring to my ex staff. I’m going in on Monday to hand over my pass and (this is the best) my Blackberry followed by some more beers.  I’ll go into work for the last time then on Monday but I doubt there will be much to do.  So in way, today I am retired.  Ish.

Ben (with his girlfriend Jesse) and Sam are coming over tonight.  Ben turned 21 yesterday.  For some odd reason he wanted to celebrate his becoming a legal drinker with his friends last night in and around the bars in New Brunswick.  Tonight we’re all off for a curry to celebrate.  Sam gets to drive.  Anne and John, now the extended family, are coming too.  All good fun.

  • Steve,

Congratulation on the completion of an incredible journey – the preparation stage of your new life – and the start of an totally new journey.

Ziggy and I have found this new life, albeit temporary for us (for now), to be the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done – and has brought us together like never before.

I’m sitting in the town square in Cannes and we will return to Nice tonight to say our final goodbyes to my brother Dan and family who fly to Paris and back to Ohio.

Life is always throwing curve balls and it’s never simple – the parts are still not cleared though French Customs – so Windancer IV will be delayed as well – as least we’re not “suffering” while we wait – this is truely an incredible part of the world.

Best wishes, have fun in Arizona and keep your “eye on the horizon”.

    See you in December.
    John
