Retired – ish

Today I had a big surprise at work.  I sort of knew that something was being organised as a few folks at work had indicated they’ll be meeting me for lunch.  I figured it would just be a get together in a meeting room.  My manager had suggested one or two of us go for a meal at lunch.  I thought this was a ruse to make sure I was around at the right time.  But in the end we did go out and there were a whole bunch of people waiting for us – including Helen.  They had managed to get hold of her and have her join.  That made the surprise all the more special – for both of us.  I really had no idea.  So we had a nice Italian.  There were some speeches and some gifts – all very nice.  They included a great nautical clock which we’ll mount on Dignity somewhere special.

So – now that we’ve had the goodbyes and the speeches I still have two days left at work.  Officially.  Practically I have cleared my desk both figuratively and metaphorically.  I’ve actually agreed to stay in touch for longer than Tuesday in case there are any questions and to provide continued mentoring to my ex staff. I’m going in on Monday to hand over my pass and (this is the best) my Blackberry followed by some more beers.  I’ll go into work for the last time then on Monday but I doubt there will be much to do.  So in way, today I am retired.  Ish.

Ben (with his girlfriend Jesse) and Sam are coming over tonight.  Ben turned 21 yesterday.  For some odd reason he wanted to celebrate his becoming a legal drinker with his friends last night in and around the bars in New Brunswick.  Tonight we’re all off for a curry to celebrate.  Sam gets to drive.  Anne and John, now the extended family, are coming too.  All good fun.

Big Thanks

I was taken out to lunch today by members of my local team here in the US.  We went for an Indian buffet locally so I’m sitting here very full and sleepy.  They presented me with a card (very appropriate) and two coffee mugs which were perfect.  I will post pictures when I can but I can describe them now.  They are large (just right) and have the word ‘coffee’ in many languages all over them.  Very educational.  Now I can first learn how to say coffee in all these languages.  Next I’ll have to learn which country to use each word.  Best done by being there I reckon.

So I just wanted to say thanks to the team for the card and gifts and in general for the time we’ve worked together over the last two years.

I’m really beginning to realize I’m leaving.

Adapting Plans

It’s looking more and more likely that we will close on the rental property we’re looking at after our return from Arizona.  Given that the place will need some decoration (quite a bit in fact) we’re faced with a choice of paying for this to be done or cutting our trip to the Uk short – the latter option being by far the most likely one we’ll opt for.  We won’t make this decision until we have to.  We have another round of inspections / repair estimates to gather next Monday after which we’ll know if a deal is on.

In the meantime I have 4 work days left.  While it all still feels mostly surreal I am beginning to get twinges of excitement.  Work has really slowed down recently as I tidy up the things left over.  Nothing new is coming my way and it is pointless kicking off any new initiatives.

Soon we’ll need to strategize further on selling my car.  Results so far have been disappointing.  Local newspaper ads start today so we’ll see if that generates more interest that AutoTrader (no calls), Craigslist (one call).

Nearly there

This morning we went over our Arizona itinerary to make sure all was in order.  We have some food ordering to do for when we’re in the Grand Canyon but apart from that we’re all set to go.  I can’t believe this is next week.  I beginning to feel a little excited about this.  Chances are we’ll be off to Arizona without having resolved all the issues around buying our rental property so we’ll be dealing with all this along the way.  It will be good to escape though.  Life has been pretty tense for a while and I think it will require a change of scene to unwind from everything.

To all those who think sailing is all paradise, take a look at this blog entry from our sister ship Mirasol.

Hurricane Watch

It’s that time of year again when, driven by the warming Atlantic and Caribbean waters, the frequency and intensity of Atlantic Hurricanes is increasing. Hurricanes usually begin as low pressure troughs off the west coat of Africa and head west at a leisurely pace. Most of these low pressure troughs fizzle out but some build into fearsome storms. Dignity is in the shooting range so the hope is that she will be missed as she was last year. I keep my eyes on the NOAA website with morbid curiosity.  CatCo have a storm plan and Nanny Cay is pretty safe.  Nevertheless, being passed by by all the seasons storms would be the best outcome.
