Escape #1

Managed to leave work early today.  That’s now it until June when I return from the Atlantic trip.  Thoughts can now really begin to shift to the upcoming trip.  Most my gear is now packed.  A lot of room is taken up with Celestial Navigation gear / books.  This should add an additional educational element to the trip.  I’m also looking forward to spending the long weekend in Bermuda with Helen.  This should be a small taster for the future ahead.  John and his crew have probably arrived in Bermuda now so chances are we’ll meet them early on.

For now – I am going to get my head around the reality of the situation.  Everything still feels a bit unreal.  Personal plans all seem to be working well and though not without issues, we’re moving onwards in a bit of dream.

I have titled this entry “Escape #1” as today was my originally planned retirement date.  I think this is messing with my head a bit as part of me is nagging away saying I could be all done now.  Escape #2 is on August 12th.  That should be the last one.  I’ll try my best to avoid further persuasion.

Finally – a big thanks to all who have wished me well on the trip.  I will be disappointed if we have perfect weather all the way.  I am sort of hoping for a few trials along the way to bolster future confidence as well as break the rhythm.  Watch the blog – I expect to be posting once every day or so.

Xmas in Antigua

Flights are all now booked to bring John, Ben, Sam and Ben’s girlfriend Jesse to Antigua for Xmas. They’re all arriving within 20 mins of each other on the 24th of December and leaving on the 19th of Jan. That gives us three weeks together. It is said that Antigua has as many beaches as there are days in the year so if that’s all we want, we can stay in Antigua and get variety. We will also consider the visiting Barbuda, Guadeloupe and maybe even Dominica. It will be all down to what everyone wants. I suspect we’ll do more stops in less islands although getting away from British Antigua and getting over to French Guadeloupe will add some cultural variety.

Non-Washable MP3 Players

They’re all non-washable aren’t they?  Well – at least the one I had until now was not for the washing machine.  Leaving aside the inevitable domestic dispute that is now behind us, I am now the proud owner of an 80Gb Zune.  This was something we had planned on getting for playing music aboard Dignity later in the year.  This plan, out of necessity, has been brought forward.  Something to play with over the weekend.

Converging Paths ….

Windancer IV leaves Antigua around noon today.  This sets her on the path for our first convergence in Bermuda next weekend.  Helen and I will arrive on the 16th for a long weekends stay.  During that time we’ll meet up with John and the rest of the crew and hopefully all will pass Helen’s approval.

Last night we booked three flights from Philadelphia to Antigua to get Ben, Sam and Jessica (Ben’s g/f) to us down in the islands to share Xmas and New Year with us.  Three and a half weeks in all.  We’ll also aim to get John from the Uk over to us for the same period.

During this time, (Windancer IV) John accompanied with his family having recrossed the Atlantic in Nov/Dec will be heading North through the islands.  Chances are we’ll have our second convergence with Windancer IV around this time.  By this time we should all have some salty tales to tell.

Hookah

We have decided we will have a Hookah on board.  This will be in addition to our dive gear.  For some time I have been debating whether or not to get a dive compressor but have come to the conclusion that I’d rather spend the money on a Hookah.  In case you don’t know, a Hookah is a floating compressor which drives air down to divers below.  The Hookah will be far more flexible for the majority of dives which are either shallow and/or cleaning the bottom of the boat.  It will be easier to maintain and usable for guests.  We’ll get one that can be used by up to four people so we can share experiences with guests.
