Lousy Weather

Yesterday was a day of relaxing and reading. We didn’t even leave the boat. We had planned on snorkeling perhaps but the skies never really cleared. It’s always better to snorkel with the sun brightly overhead as the colours are so much better.

Today we have tentative plans for taking the bus to Castries with Anne and Jim. Right now it is totally overcast and raining hard. It could end up being like yesterday. Tonight we’re off to Bees Knees for dinner there.

In the meantime I am awaiting an update from CatCo regarding the latest upgrade to the firmware. It needs a site visit but they are waiting on successful testing on another boat before coming here. The uncertainty is a bit of a pain. I also have a little consultancy work to do. It’s a good time to get it done while waiting for the rain to end.

Friends Reunited

After three months of separation we finally got back together with Anne and Jim from Bees Knees last night. It was great to hear what they’ve been up to. They’ve visited much the same places as we have but have different stories to tell. Helen cooked homemade pizza and we had banana flambé for desert. These were our first bananas since polishing off the crate. Jim brought the necessary ingredients for Ti Punch which he seems to be unable to do without. A good evening all round.

Along the way Anne and Jim have started their own blog. They are a funny couple and a little of their personality comes over in their blog. If you’re interested in their blog, click on the picture. Their blog makes much more use of inline pics than ours does which I kind of like. This prompts me to look a little more at the blogging capabilities of Word which allows me to prepare blogs with pics offline and post them to our site.

Ben’s Graduation

We finally learned from Ben a few days ago when/where his graduation from Rutgers would take place. As this is such a big day we’ve decided to head back to NJ to see him pass from school into the rest of his life. Today we booked our flights from Grenada to JFK – non-stop on Air Jamaica. It’ll be nice to see folks back in NJ and most of all Ben and Sam.

Between now and then we can think of all the things we’d like from the US and have them sent to our friends for pickup.

Our friends Anne and Jim from Bees Knees arrived in Rodney Bay today and we’re having a pizza/beer based reunion aboard Dignity this evening. We haven’t seen them since we said goodbye in St Martin last December. Will be nice to catch up.

Plodding onwards

Another half day of trawling through bank records to figure out what was what.  This time around everything is compounded by the fact that last year was probably the most complicated of our lives.  That generated transactions we need to make sure are correctly understood.  It also meant, as a result of all the other distractions, we delayed making good and proper records as we went or at least a short time after.  Therefore our memories are being really stretched.  I’m down to about the last ten or so transactions but each takes progressively longer to resolve.  We’ll get there no doubt.

Yesterday morning we had good reception on the coconut telegraph.  We heard our friends on Bees Knees over in Fort-de-France so we hailed them after the net and had a good chat.  They should be here in St Lucia in 1-2 weeks so I think we’ll be finally rendezvousing.  We like the idea of climbing the Pitons together so it would be worth waiting to do that hike/climb with good friends.  We have a good reason to wait as an upgrade to the control system (just a new chip) is available.  This one requires a site visit by a tech to install so we may end up waiting here to get this done.  It also let’s Jim and Anne on Bees Knees catch up with us.  We have a phone call with CatCo this afternoon to decide when/where to meet up.  Depending on that call we’ll lay down our near term plans.  We’ve been in Rodney Bay long enough and want a change of scene.  Even if we agree to meet here we’ll probably head off somewhere down the coast in the interimn.

One thing I didn’t mention in our previous blog is that on Saturday, when coming back from the shops, we passed by a whole load of World ARC boats which were coming into the marina.  They have just completed a 14 month circumnavigation which started and ended in Rodney Bay Marina.  Didn’t realize they would be arriving nor that they were completing the ARC until I looked it up on the website afterwards.  No wonder they were all looking pleased with themselves.

Every time we talk to someone who’s off on their world or semi world trip or see people finishing theirs I am reminded of our original goal and yearn to follow their tracks.  As I have perhaps mentioned before we will use the summer recess (in Grenada) to finally make up our minds if we’re going to do this.  The more we encounter others, the more we lean towards following our original plan and picking up the pieces afterward.  Helen has met a number of ‘admirals’ who have crossed oceans with just their ‘captains’ including a couple on an identical boat.  Hearing how others have fared has made her comfortable with the idea of long passages.  Nonetheless, we will still make our decision this summer and will, of course, let you know what it is.

Apart from tax prep we did manage a few more boat chores yesterday.  Helen cleaned some of the stainless steel while I fixed a door jamb and replaced the helm electrical panel with a new one we were given.  We now have the old one as spare.  The only issue was a sticky guage so now we’re in a good spot with a decent spare.

Not sure what to do today.  Right now it’s peeing down.  I’ve started reading “The Audacity of Hope” by Obama.  It’s good.  Maybe I’ll turn a few more pages today.

Dinghies and Planes

Today the combined inhabitants of Godiva, Bees Knees and Dignity all headed off into the lagoon in our dinghies to the Dutch side to walk Simpson Bay beach. As we had more crew our lot were distributed around the group. As ever, our dinghy was slowest – no idea why. Another thing to figure out sometime.

At Maho beach we had burgers and beer for lunch. The great thing about Maho beach is it is right on the end of the main runway on the island. When the big jets take off, the blast blows anything by the fence into the sea. It is quite popular to stand here and brave the sandstorm. We found it more amusing to watch the victims of this behavior. One lot had put their belongings down on the beach which was all blown into the sea.

Back on the boat we’re watching some comedy shows on John’s laptop. Nice relaxing day.

Parts are arriving for the boat this evening. CatCo are really helping out so big thanks to them. Weather is rapidly improving. We could be off to Antigua fairly soon. Tomorrow could end up being a rush of final fixes, fuelling and provisioning.

It would be nice to move the boat back out into Marigot a day before we leave so we can have fresh croissant for our final breakfast. We have to prepare for a long sail as the winds may not fully cooperate by moving enough to the NE. That means we could be under sail for more than a day maybe having to go as far south as Guadaloupe before tacking back to Antigua. We’re all getting quite excited about the trip.
