We made it

We’re finally here.  We’re aboard Dignity.  In fact we arrived about 10:30 last night.  There was a bottle of champagne but no note so we are wondering who it’s from.  This was placed in the fridge.  We dropped our bags and made for the bar which was, unsurprisingly, shut.  So we went back to the boat and slept well – the bottle will wait for the right moment.  It’s been raining a lot and its quite humid.  Some sorting out of our stuff to do this morning followed by provisioning for a few days.  Then we’ll take Dignity out for a test sail before having a Q&A session with the staff this afternoon.

We could be off to St Martin as early as tomorrow evening but another option is Monday.  More soon.

Wind Forecast

I’ve been looking on and off at the wind forecast for the BVIs for the last 18 months to get a feel of things.  Now it’s for real.  These predictions now span the time period we expect to be crossing to St Martin.  I will consult with locals in the BVIs but from what I see it looks like the reduced wind speeds early next week will make for an easy motor over to St Martin on Monday or Tuesday evening.  A weather prediction that far out is about as good as predicting tomorrows movement in the stock market so we’ll have to keep watching and refining our plans.  Next message probably from aboard Dignity.

First stop

With some help from a contact we have in St Martin we have decided that we will sail to the French side.  We had been worrying that we’d run into difficulties if we checked into the French side and when my parents arrive mid-Nov on the Dutch side we’d subsequently run into difficulties when leaving the island on the boat.  Turns out this is not an issue.  We have also heard from other cruisers who live in the BVIs half the year that it’s best to go to the French side.  We won’t have a dinghy when we arrive so we’ll have to head to a marina and walk to the port authorities.  This defines our first stop which will be Marina Fort Louis in Marigot.

Once there we’ll figure out our next steps which will be essentially picking up our dinghy/motor, collecting our belongings from the shipping company and deciding where to stay for the following couple of weeks. We only intend to stay in marinas when it is essential so it’s important to understand what options we have. I do know we have anchorages nearby. There is a drawbridge that opens three times a day which lets into Simpson Bay where we can sail the boat over to the Dutch side for the marine stores there. Simpson Bay as an anchorage is not supposed to be so hot so I can imagine we’ll be in and out of there.

Arrived in Fort Lauderdale

My last blog (sent from my phone) turned out to be presumtuous.  As we made our way to the end of the runway the weather deteriorated.  The flight corridor which we were supposed to fly down began to have a problem so instead of roaring off down the runway we had to taxi off to a lot where we parked while they figured out what to do.  We eventually got back in line to take off only to find when we neared takeoff the winds had changed direction so much they had altered runways so we had to follow a bunch of planes around the tarmac to a new runway.  A few planes made it off, including the one in front of us.  The winds changed again so we had to make a fourth attempt to take off from yet another starting point.  This time we made it.  Two hours late.

The Floridian’s think it’s cold down here today but compared to the misery we left, the blue skies and high 60s are very pleasant.  Despite landing late we shot for and succeeded in covering all the chores we had aimed to accomplish in both days.  We now have our Florida licenses, our mail (including flight tickets to BVIs), our new headsail and enough generator spares for 1,000 hours of use.  I guess we are going to have to take some time to learn to slow down.

While doing this we’ve come close to sorting out our insurance for the next year.  The post-charter boat survey came in yesterday and we sent it off to the agent.  There are a few items that need to be remediated in 30 days but we are good to go for our trip to St Martin where we can take our time to address these issues.

Now we’re at a loose end.  Nothing to fix or do.  There is some paperwork to look at and some repacking to do to fit the spare parts in but we’ve agreed to leave that to tomorrow.  I think this prevarication is forgivable.  For now, we’ve decided to treat ourselves to a meal out before we collapse with tiredness.

Finally – we’re beginning to feel the vestiges of some excitement.  It certainly doesn’t feel like we’re going on vacation.  More a change of life.  A lot to sink in.

Getting warmer

The weather we are leaving is utterly cold, wet and miserable. We’re looking forward to walmer climes. Florida here we come.
