Sam has a home

Got another call from Sam today. After yesterday I wondered if it would be more bad news. Turned out he was quite excited by the fact he had found somewhere he felt acceptable and had a possibility of getting. He had a few questions to ask me to help him decide on the place which he eventually did. Long and the short of it is he’ll have his own place to stay as of tomorrow – August 1st. Another round of furniture/stuff moving therefore looms this coming weekend.

5 days on

It’s now 5 days since we sold and left our home.  The strange thing is that none of us so far miss it.  I certainly believed that at some point some form of separation would be felt by now.

Looking back, the exit started a long time ago.  Putting the house on the market in some ways marked the time it ceased to become our home.  Right from that point we were geared to sell and move out.  Upon engaging the realtors, the first two weeks the effort was aimed at staging the house making it as appealing to sell as possible.  This include depersonalizing the home – the removal of photos from walls, etc.  The idea being that you want viewers to be able to visualize the home as theirs and not feel a visitor.  Once we had a buyer, the effort was non stop sorting out all the issues and selling the contents.

So perhaps we didn’t leave 5 days ago, maybe it was in March when we started our prep.  And maybe that’s why we feel the way we do.

In exactly two weeks I will be jobless as well as homeless – like Helen.  That hasn’t sunk in yet either.  It all seems a bit surreal.

Wanna buy a car?

With a lot of help from John we got my car prepared for sale today.  It is now listed on AutoTrader.  Know anyone interested?

Homeless

We’re now officialy homeless.  We thought we had left ourselves little to do but we were busy from 6am when we woke up until 10:30am when the new owners arrived for their walkthough.  We briefly met them – they’re a nice couple and they had parents with them.  It was a bit emotional leaving our home for eight and a half years.  We’ve been so busy recently we hadn’t the time to absorb it.

Sam was in a hurry as he was due to meet friends at 11 so we all headed off to MacDonalds in three different cars for a quick breakfast.  This bit didn’t go quite to plan as we failed to agree which one to go to so Sam and I ended up at one and Helen at another.  Helen decided to go on to our friends house as there was no point trying to rendezvous.  I had a very quick breakfast with Sam and headed off there too.  Helen and I arrived within a minute of eachother.

After another hour of taking stuff down into Anne and John’s basement we were done.  That was it.  We were out of our home.  Except for the legal bit.  That happened a little later without us having to be there.  We heard that the new owners raced off from the closing to jump into the pool.  It’s nice to hear of their excitement – we wish them well.

In the evening I went mountain biking with John.  I won’t say too much about this except I found the downhill bits extremely more delightful than the uphill bits and I am sore in quite a few places this morning.

Curry, wine and DVD finished of the evening.

I don’t think our new situation has sunk in yet.  Hopefully we’ll figure out soon what we’ve done and regain the excitement for our future.  I have 12 more days left at work and then it’s on to Arizona.  In the meantime we’re trying to close on our investment property nearby which should stop us from getting bored with things.

Last night at home

We’re just about done bar loading the last few things into the car.  We can do most of this in the morning before 10am when we need to hand over the keys and leave.  It hardly feels like home anymore with everything gone bar the stuff we’re leaving for the new owners.

Tonight we’re having dinner with our neighbours which is very helpful as it means we don’t have to worry about food.  Our neighbour is a spirits importer and we may have to participate in a marketing excercise (ie sampling).  That’ll be tough.

This coming weekend should be a lot more relaxing than many of the previous.  I will be spending a few hours cleaning my car ready for sale.  I’m not looking forward to letting go of my convertible but one has to make sacrificies.
