Two more items on the list closed off

Car is sold to a dealer. Not the price I was hoping for through a private sale but at least we now have closure. Also, last night we booked our tickets to the UK. We’re heading off this Friday night and will return to the US in just over two weeks. One way or the other our direction will be pretty set before we return.

Next Month

We can finally say “Next month we’re off.” it still seems a little unreal so some more pinching of self may be in order.

Things haven’t really slowed down yet. Today I’m off touring the local Audi dealers to find the best price on my car. If nothing happens privately over the next day or so we’ll just sell to the dealer offering the best price. I had a couple of leads while we were in Arizona but they both bought other cars before we returned.

It looks more and more likely we’ll head off to UK sooner rather than later as we’re still not close to closing on our investment property. We have to be in UK by late next week for a wedding so our time would be better spent if we go early and close on our return, if we can at all. We should have this all pinned down today or tomorrow.

Ben and Sam were back on their education trail today. Hopefully they’ll let us know how they got on.

I checked my weight this morning and I am at 200lb. This is the best I have been for years. We weren’t going out of our way to have strict diets in Arizona so I put this down to healthy living, good exercise and lack of (at least reduced) stress. Very promising for the future.

Back in NJ

We’re all safely back in NJ. Ben and Sam have been dropped off in New Brunswick and we’re back to staying with our friends Anne and John (our debt to them accumulates).

We actually stayed last night back in Sam’s place where this trip all started. During our absence his house mates all changed. We met a couple of the new ones. One is a fresh out of college music teacher who majored in classical piano and has a room full with his electric piano and acoustic/electrical guitars. We met the girl who has taken the room Sam has to walk through to get to his. She must be very tolerant to have got that room. We also learned that one of the other tenants is some sort of producer in the music industry. Sounds like Sam has been very lucky. Not all went well though. Although his car appears fixed (by looking through a grubby window) the garage where it is housed was shut this morning so he could not pick it up. Being a long weekend he won’t be able to get it before school starts. Furthermore, he thinks he left his school schedule and other notes in there so he’s going to have to find an alternate source for this information before lessons start on Tuesday.

Ben was simply pleased (as punch) to get back to his girlfriend.

We have learned that Air India, with whom we booked our flights to the Uk, are no longer flying the route and we now have to arrange a refund as well as book alternate flights. Given the delays around getting started with our investment property this may allow us to work around this a bit without incurring a penalty for changing flights. Need to work through the o/s issues quickly next week.

That’s about it. We’ve worked through our paperwork that built up while we were away. We believe some still went to our old place so we’ll need to pick that up Monday when we head back to visit the boys one last time before school starts.

Tomorrow we are at a bit of a loose end. I’m hoping to arrange one or two viewings of my car – hopefully to sell. Otherwise we may go for a walk with our newly strengthened legs.

WFR Results

The entire class passed. We’re off to lunch.

WFR Day 8 – Night Scenario

Course Leaders: Jo & LiamI’m going to skip the day by day detail. Although I’m sure it’s going in, we’ve done so much that I’ve lost track what day we did each thing on. Somewhere in there we’ve added heart/lung issues, seizures, animal bites, allergies, diabetes, search & rescue.

Of particular note was our night time scenario which took place last night in woods about 17 miles north of Flagstaff. We were divided into 6 groups of 5 which each group sent off into the woods at different points being told we would know our scenario when we came to it. I had been prepped before hand to trip, fall and present a broken leg with bone sticking out. I had been made up to look quite gross under my jeans. I was told to make it appear real to test the rest of the team under duress. For a while I got away with it but was rumbled eventually. During all this one of the other team member went into a seizure (again preplanned) so the remaining three now had two patients to deal with. All the other teams had the same deal.

Once we had finished, our team was set up to be a mass incident for the remaining five teams to deal with. This one got very creative with much makeup (moulage) and acting being used. We had a serious head injury, a lost hand, a disembowelment, a guy with two crushed forearms and my role was a crushed chest. The rest of the parties thought they were heading back to camp and got a nice surprise.

I had a lot of fun playing victim although lying on the ground I got quite cold. I was one of only two people who played victim twice so this time I didn’t get a chance to play rescuer.

We’ve been allowed a lie in for day 9. Class starts at 9am not 8am and today is expected to be revision day. Tomorrow it is exams and practical tests. Then we’ll hopefully all be done and proudly call ourselves WFRs (pronounced Wiffers or Woofers depending on who says it).
