Fish?

In the morning Brian and I decided to try and catch fish at the entrance to the pass. We managed to get boiled in the sun but brought no fish home. At one point I thought I might have something on the line but it was either snagged on a rock or actually a fish that ran under a rock. Either way it resulted in another lost hook.

In the evening we went ashore to eat as it was beef curry evening. We were encouraged to play a couple of strenuous (and highly amusing) beach games to music after which we danced then ended up drinking cava with the workers until after midnight.

Sigatoka and the Evening Show

The adult trip to Sigatoka took up the morning. Helen, Janine and Brian took the launch up river while I followed in the dinghy. It was a lot further than we thought to reach the jetty so it’s good we didn’t try to find it with all four of in the dinghy. Awaiting us was our taxi driver who took us into Sigatoka where we shopped for souvenirs and a few tins Helen needed.

During this time Ben had another couple of dives and finished the theory for his training passing his exam. Congrats to him. Holly was firmly established on the island and remained there for the rest of the day.

Helen and I stayed aboard for the afternoon while Brian and Janine went ashore. Later they picked us up and we went ashore to have a meal and watch the evening show along with Passages. The deal for cruisers is fantastic. For Fiji$15 we get a decent meal and watch a nearly 2 hour show much the same as the daytime show only longer and more spectacular in the dark. The boys from Monkey Feet were all involved in the show having been here nearly 6 weeks. A Dutch couple who have been here for a month have watched almost every evening show and are yet to be tired of it.

A Full Day

The morning was split in different directions. Helen stayed aboard while the rest of us went ashore. Holly’s plan was simply to hang out at the resort. Ben started his dive certification instruction. Brian, Janine and I went off for a couple of dives. While waiting to go I managed to snag a huge toasted bacon and egg sandwich from the cook which really filled me up.

On the first dive Brian had problems with his mask and ended up scratching the dive. Janine and I accompanied the dive master on a dive called ‘Shark Wall’. Janine was really hoping not to see any sharks but we did spot two and in the end Janine now seems to be looking forward to seeing more of them. The second dive was more successful for Brian.

Back at the resort we decided to eat lunch ashore as it was the build your own burgers we’d missed the night before. Accompanied by sausages. And cold meats. And salad. And fruit. I certainly felt pretty loaded after that.

The afternoon was spent relaxing and sleeping off lunch. Helen cooked curry for dinner which filled any remaining space left in our bowels. A Very Full Day.

We’ve made the decision to stay here for the rest of our guests stay. In fact, Helen and I may hang around for some time after. We’re planning to leave Fiji in 3-4 weeks time. There’s not enough time, not inclination, to head back out to the islands and we want to hang around the SW corner for our crew to arrive later in the month. So it’s a question of where to wait. Here seems pretty laid back so here we’ll be for a while. The place is very cruiser friendly. When the day crowds are out of the way we have the place to share with the few overnighters. It’s all quite relaxed.

Today the four adults are planning a trip to the town of Sigatoka for souvenir shopping and some provisioning. Ben will continue his instruction. Holly is delighted to have a chance to hang out again on the beach. And we’ll start the day with a cooked breakfast ashore.

Likuri Island (Robinson Crusoe Island)

As soon as we could we paid the marina fees in Musket Cove and left the dock. The winds were light so we motored the entire way to Likuri Island using the headsail for a small boost. We had four lines out and hoped for a deep sea catch on the leg outside of the main reefs. All we caught was a plastic bag. We did lose one lure which suggests we snagged something of a decent size.

INSERT_MAP

We arrived in time for lunch then went ashore to catch the daytime show for the tourists who come to the island for just the day. The show was pretty good although the dancing was very similar to the Polynesian dancing we saw in the Cooks and French Polynesia.

After the show we joined Pam and John from Passages for a beer and chatted for a while after which we booked Ben on a beginners dive course which he will do over the next few days.

We returned to the boat for a while and then went back to the resort for dinner. We’d been told it was ‘build your own burger’ night which got quite a few votes. It turned out to be pasta and fish curry night which turned out pretty good. While ashore the heavens opened so we waited a while before deciding to go back in the torrential rain. We did, of course, get soaked and the rain did, of course, stop as soon as we arrived.

The resort here is very low key and quite sleepy, at least when the day tourists are not around. It’s a good spot to while away a few days.

I forgot to mention that while in Musket Cove I uploaded earlier pictures. These have been added to the appropriate blog entries so for those interested I suggest a walk back through the last week or sos blog entries.

Shore Day

Being on the dock allowed us all to stretch our legs. Brian and his family spent a lot of time at the resort pool which is available for marina guests. We all took advantage of the showers.

In the evening we used the BBQs at the bar to grill up sausages, burgers and chicken. Very tasty.

We’ll be off today hoping to reach Robinson Crusoe island. We’ve had a few days of light NW so the deep water section of the passage should be ok. Hope to catch some good fish in that stretch.
