Sailing South

We had a nice quiet day yesterday. The other boats left fairly early and we had the reef to ourselves for the day. We went ashore and took some great pics. We also decided to put out a stern anchor just in case the current should reverse and put us on the reef. Apart from that, not a lot.

We left to go south fairly early this morning. Right now we’re approaching the northern end of Grenada. The winds are not too strong so we’re taking our time.

Would you believe it – we caught a fish. On the biggest lure we have we caught something like a sixteen inch barracuda. This is the smallest one we’ve caught so far but it’s been filleted all the same. I definitely need some practice at filleting as again I made a mess of it. The lines are all out still so maybe we’ll be able to add some more meat to this evenings fare.

We’re heading for St David’s where we intend to discuss this summer’s haul out which we intend to do mid to late August/early September coinciding with the peak period of hurricanes.

Passage to Mustique

Sometimes it just all works out well. We left Friendship Bay around 7:30am, 2 hours after moonrise to have the best of the lunar effects. Sure enough, we made it over to Mustique on a single tack. As we left the harbor we saw a lot of activity on a nearby cay. It has many onlookers on land and many boats surrounding it. We had heard that one of the annual quota of (one, two or four – not sure which) whales had been caught yesterday. We wondered if this was something to do with that. But that was not all. Shortly after leaving the Bay, as we passed through some gull activity indicating there could be feeding activity below, we hooked something on the lure I bought in Bequia. Reeling it in we found we had caught a Blackfin Tuna.

This was the first fish I have filleted so I made a bit of a mess. The second half was better than the first so there’s a suggestion I’ll get good in time. Now we can look forward to fresh grilled fish for lunch and there’s several pounds of good meat in the freezer for later.

Where’s the wind?

We set off this morning shortly after 6am. The strongest winds we’ve seen have been 12 knots out of the ESE. That is just ok to get our Code Zero out and for a few hours that pulled us along. Now the winds have dropped to 6 knots and with a knot and a half current against us we can no longer sail. For now we are motor sailing and hoping the wind will pick up.

We have four lines out again. No fish so far. I’m seeing a pattern emerging here.

At Sea – ish

I’m not yet tired of the novelty of hooking up while at sea. Right now we’re on our way to Anse Cochon, about 3nm down the coast from Marigot Bay. We only have the headsail up in light winds so are going very slowly. That’s ok as it gives us time to get the trolling lines out. Hope again triumphs over experience. I have a new jumbo lure which is out for the second time. Looking at it this morning I saw some teeth marks so something must have had a chomp last time it was out.

Yesterday was, as planned, a slow day. I managed to read a lot of Obama’s “The Audacity of Hope” book read. Riveting stuff. We also had a snorkel. Under Helen’s tuition I made omelet for dinner.

This is cool

Internet connection from the mast is so good I’m blogging this directly while sailing down the coast.
