Why Dignity?

Since soon after my wife and I were married we have been saving for a future where we hoped we would not have to work forever. Our ambition was to find a way to travel together once our family had grown and flown the nest. In the eighties I somewhat liked a band called Deacon Blue – in particular, a song called Dignity. The song spoke of a guy who was quietly saving his money for a future in which he would be “on his holidays” while everyone else was still “doing the rounds.” The song reminded me of the reason why we were holding back on enjoying the same lifestyle as some of our peers.

At the time, we did not sail nor had any notion that would at some point live on a boat. Around 2001, the idea began to form that maybe sailing would be the way to travel. Well, to cut a long story short, here we are, about to take possession of our new boat, Dignity, which we named partially in recognition of the journey we took to this point.

An additional reason for choosing the name Dignity is the plethora of alternate meanings which we feel are relevant to the future lifestyle we’re currently building for ourselves. Examples are “decency”, “grace”, “self-respect”, “nature”, “serenity”, “elegance”, “transendency”.
