White’s Bay

Monday morning was taken up with having the car oil and filters changed. While waiting for the work to be done I visited the information site to gather information on local hikes. They punted me to the Department of Conservation site in nearby Renwick.

Shortly before lunch we headed off to Renwick. While looking for the DOC office we found an Old English Pub which we liked better than restaurants in Blenheim, choosing it for our meet up with Ed and Cornelia in the evening. The lady in the DOC office recommended a short hike on the coast NNE of Blenheim near White’s Bay.

We took her advice and headed over to the coast. We ate our lunch in the car before taking off on the hike. It was quite pleasant offering us some pretty good views of the coast. We left the camera in the car so there will be no pictures of this day.

We headed back to our cabin for a rest before getting in contact with Ed and Cornelia from A Capella to arrange the evening’s meet up. We met at the pub at 7pm and did the usual chatting about where we’d been, what our plans are, what we’d heard about other cruisers, etc. While together we made a call to Gary and Jackie from Inspiration Lady who are still in Picton to arrange a group meet up on Wednesday.

Today we’re off to Picton ourselves and will be booking our ferry ride this morning.

Another part of our sailing preparation is I’ve started looking at the detailed weather forecasts and models for the trip to Fiji. I’ve always looked about 2 months ahead with weather regions to build up familiarity with the regions to which we’re heading. We have of course spent a lot of time looking at this passage when preparing to come south. So already it’s the same old free way of high’s and lows barreling over from west to east through which we’ll ultimately have to thread a path. One aspect which is already apparent (obvious really) is that an ideal reach will involve winds with a southerly component. And that means it will be cold.

Running around

Did a lot of running around yesterday but on reflection I managed to complete nothing. To that end I’ll claim completion (forgot to mention the previous day) of my effort to permanently plumb in the washing machine waste.

As part of the build of our enhanced rudder pins I removed my starboard flange and dropped it off so they could drill out a larger hole for the new pins. Hopefully these will be ready today.

There also may be a day or two delay with our new car as the NZ registration paperwork seems to be slowing down delivery. Our charger should be on it’s way here within a day or two.

We can now eat of the floor of the boat as Helen spent another day cleaning and sorting. Ben had a very productive session with a contact he has made in New York with respect to understanding more about starting work as an actuary including getting some hiring leads.

During one of my runaround sessions I took the camera out for some pics of the place. Enjoy.

Yesterday evening we dined with Ed/Cornelia from A Capella and Vickie/Steve from True Companions. We started off meeting up aboard Dignity for cocktails and starters before trudging all the way to the other end of Opua to True Companions for dinner and desert. Hardly needs to be said that we had a good time of it.

Today we’re going to walk to Paihia and set up a local bank account and eat out for lunch. If our news rudder pins are ready when we return I’ll sort that out so we are free to move.

Full Moon Party

The Jackster’s showed up and anchored next to us around midday. We soon had them over to share our experiences of the last few months as well as abandoning our plans to hoist the main sail in favour of a few beers.

Around 6pm we headed ashore to Ano Beach for the ferry service to the Full Moon Party. Sadly, the ferry service was the weak link of the whole evening requiring some folks to wait over two hours for their turn to board and make the passage round to the party. Fortunately we made it over on the second one out so we didn’t have to wait too long.

The party was a lot of fun. A lot of the people we have previously mentioned on our blog were there. Most people on their way to New Zealand this year are either now in Tonga or soon to be arriving. I’m probably missing a few but those that we can put our heads together and remember are : A Cappella, Anthem, Bamboozle, Callisto, Delos, Freezing Rain, Imagine, Inspiration Lady, Jackster, Kamaya, Mojo, Paleides, Passages, Scream, Sea Mist, Trim, Tyee & Visions of Johanna. There were many others and we made some new acquaintances along the way.

A lot of effort had been put into things including three 10 minute shows of which Ben played a part (dressed as a skeleton) in the first and third. Not everything went smoothly but it was all appreciated.

We didn’t get back until after midnight. We didn’t see Ben until the following morning around 11am which I saw him on the ferry. I dinghied over and he jumped in the water to avoid the trip to the beach. He hadn’t slept at all having had the beer and food go free around 3am and partying into the morning followed by helping to clear up.

We have some pictures, courtesy of Ann from Callisto, which will be posted when we can get a connection.

Tomorrow the fun continues so we’ll be off early round to Neiafu.

Lazy Sunday

We spent most of the day on the boat not doing a lot. I’ve been working my way through building up my movie library which takes time. More folks we knew showed up in the harbor ready for the regatta/rendezvous next week including Inspiration Lady who we first met in the Caribbean.

We went ashore for our evening meal at The Balcony for their Aussie BBQ. We shared our table with Ed and Cornelia from A Cappella and Kerry and Andrew from Mariposa. Later we were joined by Anne, Mike and Jenny from Callisto. Although we didn’t intend to we stayed quite late and polished off a few beers.

Toopua, Bora Bora

The sail over to Bora Bora was a little bumpy. We kept a reef in the main all the way over as from time to time we would see winds in the 20s and we expected some effects from the mountains as we passed behind Bora Bora.

Approaching Bora Bora was a wonder. Towering peaks set amongst turquoise waters surrounded by a circling reef promise lots of excitement and perhaps some hard effort over the next few days.

As the wind was still blowing strong we decided to anchor behind the smaller island of Toopua. We’d heard from both A Cappella and Sea Mist who were anchored there and they both reported a calm anchorage – something we’ve not seen for a while. Just after we anchored, Ed and Cornelia from A Cappella came by to say hello and share their lessons learned from the area.

INSERT_MAP

Ben and I decided this would be a good time to repair the hookah. This meant again taking it out of it’s housing and this time completely disassembling the compressor section. This turned out to be really difficult as the compressor pistons had jammed onto the shaft. We eventually had to use a crowbar and lots of banging to free the final piece probably annoying the guests at the expensive Hilton nearby. During all this the Sea Mists dropped by to say hello too. After several hours we were nearly done and it was time for dinner. We’ll finish this job off later this morning.

We’re gradually going bananas over our bananas. We’ve been eating as many as possible and Helen has been baking some excellent banana bread/cakes but we’re losing the battle against sanity and volume. I’m now off for breakfast. Bananas.
