The Family Arrive

At the normally still well in bed hour of 7:45am, Helen and I set off for Port Elizabeth in the hire car we’d picked up the previous day. I had an appointment at the hospital for a scan at 9:45am and the family were due to arrive at the airport at 11:55am. Plenty of time to get things done but we didn’t want delays anywhere to be able to mess the day up.

As luck would have it we made it to Port Elizabeth ahead of time and the hospital appointment was bang on time as well. The first good news is that the scans on my shoulder confirmed (I believe) the impingement diagnosis and ruled out a damaged rotator cup. No operations required. Yay.

The next bit of good news, depending on who you are and how you look at it, was that we had plenty of time to hit the Ingress portals in town. What this really meant was a couple of sit downs in the car while I did my thing then a nice walkabout a park looking over the central area and a pleasant walk down and up some stairs to the old part of town.

Having exhausted our possibilities there we headed off to the airport and didn’t have to wait too long for the family to arrive. First in were John and Bao and a few minutes later they were followed by Amy and Ben. We were separated by glass while they waited for their luggage but we were soon all together. It was another deeply emotionally moment for me as it wasn’t so long ago I was convinced I’d never see them again.

Hugs were in order all round made all the better by Bao exemplary behaviour. Normally 1 year olds, airplanes, travel, and public places can be a disastrous combination. Not so for this one.

We stopped off at the Nanaga Farmer’s stall on the way back to Grahamstown to have a bite to eat and some refreshment. The next stop was my parents cottage in the retirement complex they’re in so they could meet everyone including Bao and Amy for the first time.

After a couple of hour or two with them we took the family down to my sister’s new home (my parents old home) for everyone to settle in. John and Bao soon returned to my parents with us due to lack of internet at Sue’s and need to call home.

Later in the evening we took my parents back to Sue’s to see their old home for the first time since they left it many months ago and to see all the things Sue and Jay have done to it to make it their own. They were both very pleasantly surprised.

The rest of the evening was spent in our own company with Jay proudly managing his pride and joy – his Braii (BBQ) – for which he achieved full marks (in my opinion).

Now, for once in quite a while, some pictures.

And, just to prove we are in Africa, on the camera I found some nice pics of when Jay took us on a public road which runs through a nearby game park. Enjoy them too.

Last but not least I feel I must mention the latest goodie haul. Ben is quite used to being the mule when visiting us and this time was no exception. In the haul this time was a new powerful laptop for me (I need it to get back to my project Euler problems), zillions of large face playing cards for my Mum’s bridge club and quite a few electronic gizmos I absolutely need to survive life. Included were two, two station wireless charging pads for our phones. Cool is not a cool enough word to describe them. Plonk the phones down and they charge. Brilliant. Of course, the room has gone anything but wireless. The area beside my bed is close to a death trap of spaghetti USB cables and power leads. It’ll get sorted out in time. I’m sure.

One day to go

I’ve set a reminder to write a blog every three days because my old habit of writing one once a day just isn’t going to work for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been getting a bit tired and grumpy and have not been sleeping too well. Lot’s on my mind but the main thing is a growing pain in my right shoulder. I’ve already had it X-Rayed and been to see a local specialist. The X-Rays showed the bones were all ok. The examination revealed impingement syndrome. For near term relief I was given an injection into the area which has only helped a bit.

There’s a possibility I have a damaged rotator cuff and that will only be revealed by an ultrasound which needs to be taken in Port Elisabeth. Fortunately we were able to negotiate schedules and get a morning slot about 2 hours before the families plane lands at the nearby airport. If it turns out the rotator cuff is damaged I’ll need an operation to fix it. The guy here is keen to do it asap if it’s necessary. The 6 weeks in a sling after the op to convalesce is not going to be good wherever it happens but the choice would be here or in the UK. The decision will be made when it needs to be.

So this segues nicely into tomorrow when, as mentioned before, Ben, Amy (Ben’s girlfriend), John and Bao all arrive on the same internal flight. They won’t be here for long but we have a few things planned. The excitement builds. My sister has her 50th birthday this weekend which should be a lot of fun. This will provide a good excuse for posting a few pics soon.

Most days I manage to go out and play Ingress. It’s got to the point where it’s becoming my exercise. I park the car and take walks around town. I’ve met my two ‘opponents’ in town including meeting for a beer yesterday. We’ve already set a new, more social, date in a couple of weeks for a meal to which Helen can come. Less geeky talk for that one. I’m trying to encourage both of them to get into Project Euler as they both seem up for it.

The remaining two of my three upcoming announcements remain upcoming but are both hopefully closing in. After the excitement of my hair regrowing perhaps this pause is needed for all.

It’s good to talk

Helen and I had a long chat yesterday. We’ve been through so much and have so much more ahead of us that we’ve both been emotionally affected and it’s had an adverse affect on how we’ve been treating each other. Getting our feelings out was really helpful as we both needed to understand the other and we both had things to change.

Later in the morning we drove to Port Alfred to visit my sister and her family in the home there. It’s a nice break from the work we’ve been doing in Grahamstown. Helen and I took a couple of hours to ourselves walking around the town and having a beer/coffee at a local restaurant. I felt like we were a young couple again. It’s good to talk.

Three Things

There’s three things I really want to announce. But I shouldn’t just yet. So I won’t.

And that’s not fair is it? It’s like saying I have a secret and not telling anyone. So I’ll give one away.

My hair’s regrowing. On my head and on this ridiculous bald stripe down my chest from the spinal RT. Hairs are growing back all over. I’m proud of them. Not sure how long it will take to return to normal or what normal will be but it’s happening.

Yay.

The rest shall wait.

Enemy Contact

Since the last update we’ve been spending more time with my parents helping out with a lot of the little tasks that come with moving into a new home. We’ve also been out with my sisters family a couple of times to restaurants and local functions.

In between times I’ve been spending a lot of time playing Ingress, including a couple of days with my nephew and dragging Helen around very reluctantly. Grahamstown has only one serious player (who’s part of the opposition) but a lot of portals (most of you can switch off now). He’s at a higher level than me and it was tough at first. But I’ve built my levels up and gained a foothold in the town. To the point where, yesterday, my opposition came to defend a local church we were attacking and we met up. I’d thought he might be a local student walking around town. Turned out he was part of the university maths faculty driving about and a nice guy to boot.

So now it’s personal. I’m on a bit of a hiatus attacking his portals as most of the rest are clustered tight within the college and hard to attack. Soon.

On other fronts we have news building which is a little premature to announce. In time it will come out.

We are all looking forward to March 1st when two of our sons, one of their girlfriends and Bao arrive. We did a round of the vehicle hire companies here in Grahamastown and now have vehicles booked to pick them all up from the airport and drop them off again.

Today I spent most of the day providing tech support for a local couple. I learned a lot which I found quite positive and engaging. They’ve now got a lot more for a bit less.

This is all allowing me to postpone doing my taxes. Must get down to it tomorrow.
