Malake Island

We push on. At least Helen is doing the pushing. As I’m not feeling too well I need to be pushed to do anything at the moment. We made it across Bligh Water and behind the reef north of Viti Levu where we eventually anchored behind Malake Island.

On the way we were passed by a catamaran called Tiger. They anchored somewhere east of us.

Once anchored Helen goaded me into fixing the top two battens which were damaged on the way up from New Zealand. Fortunately, the top batten was shorter than the longer piece of the broken second batten so we were able to make the top batten from the second and only had to use the spares to make the second batten.

Once this was done I crashed for the remainder of the day. We ended up watching a movie over dinner before retiring for the evening.

We’ll probably press on today but not as far as yesterday.

Not sure where we are

Our first day’s sail from Savusavu was quite productive. We set off quite early and managed to pick up some wind. We sailed over to the Nasonisoni Passage 21nm to the WSW of Savusavu. We dropped our sails to navigated the passage which we whizzed through with about 2 to 2.5 knots of supporting current. As we’d got there early we continued on to our second weighpoint where we anchored about 4pm.

On the way we passed two boats heading in the opposite direction. No other contact made.

Once anchored we settled down for the evening, watched a movie then crashed out.

Last day in Savusavu

In the morning we went ashore to clear out and buy some fresh veg. On the way back to the boat we stopped off at a few friends to say goodbye. Amongst those we met were Gary from Inspiration Lady, George and Claudia from Dreamtime, David & Jackie from Jackster, Petr from Endless, Bruce & Alane from Migration, Paul & Maurine from Callypso and Ed & Cornelia from A Cappella. It’s amazing how many folks we know here in the creek at Savusavu. Everyone asked how I’m feeling which is a little better than before. Some progress.

Helen and I stayed on the boat for the rest of the day. Sam went ashore a couple of times to hang out with some of the folks he’s met. He returned the second time around 10:30pm. His arrival woke me up so I went upstairs and chatted with him for a while.

Today we head west on our first leg to Lautoka. I have 5 legs plotted which we’ll more or less follow.

Yet another oil change

It was time to change the port motor oil. It was on exactly 50 hours and the time was right. The weather was on and off so Sam and I took on this task. It took about the same time as the starboard engine as there was no easy easy way to optimise the task. We had to take few breaks due to rain.

But we got the job done and were satisfied. We probably won’t have to do another oil change until Australia.

In the afternoon Helen dropped Sam off ashore so he could hang out with one of the locals at Savusavu university. We met him at 5:30 ashore for dinner. He’d just met up with a crewman from another boat, Jay, who was deciding what to do next. We invited him to join us for a drink and for dinner. We also ran into the A Capallas who also joined us for the evening.

Towards the end of the evening I was feeling very, very tired so we headed back to the boat saying goodbye to everyone.

An update on my dizziness. It is getting gradually better but I still get very tired throughout the day. Recently I’ve been suffering from double vision which is easily fixed by closing one eye when I need to. In some ways it feels like progress.

Saturday (tomorrow) still seems to be the day to leave the area as the current cool southerly winds change over to easterlies.

Night out with friends

It rained all morning. I rested while Helen cleaned the outside of the boat with the rain water.

In the afternoon Helen dropped off Sam so he could hang out with the kids from the nearby village. Later, we went ashore to meet up with the Jacksters, Inspiration Ladys and A Capallas who are all here. We had a couple of beers before heading off for a chinese in town.

Sam manage to grab a ride and appeared on the boat around 10:30pm.

The winds are currently southerly which means we’re not going anywhere just yet. Looks like Saturday is the day to head south.
