At the beginning of April I faxed off requests for back country permits for the Grand Canyon. The desire was to go hiking / camping in the canyon following our medical training in August. Last weekend the permits arrived so we’re good to go. I’ve now also booked a couple of rim top rooms (without bath/shower) for the night before we descend. Given the heat in August, all hiking has to be complete before 10am. The first day we’ll head down the South Kaibab trail early in the morning and reach Bright Angel campground before 10. Next day we’ll hike up to Indian Garden in the morning, rest out the middle of the day and make the trip to and from Indian Point in the afternoon. Last day we’ll hike out – again early in the morning. The last time we hiked the canyon it was down and out in a day. I’m looking forward to a more leisurely pace this time.
