Day 10 – Jost Van Dyke

We left our mooring fairly early this morning to make our way over to Sandy Cay. We were the first boat there and it was nice to have the island to ourselves. There is a path that leads all the way around the island which was a nice walk. At the end of our walk to attempted but failed to find a geocache. Everytime we got near to where my GPS said the cache was, it would suddenly point to another 30-40 feet away. In the end we gave up. A quick sail got us over to White Bay, the home of the Soggy Dollar Bar which claims to have originated the “Painkiller” – a rather morish cocktail served aplenty around here. We quaffed morning “Painkillers” and the insubstantial pains we had, melted away. Helen and I walked up the beach and bumped into the couple we had met the day before on the way to the “Bubbly Pool.” We chatted and exchanged emails. Around 2 we motored round to Great Harbour where, this evening, we plan to dine and wine at Foxy’s. A fun and usually lively spot.

We’ve kind of worked out our plans for visiting the USVIs. Leah is desperate for US soil so we’d better go. Due to visa reasons, John has to go there by ferry. He’ll catch the ferry from here to West End, Tortola tomorrow morning and from there take a ferry to Cruz Bay, St John. By then, hopefully we’ll have sailed the shorter direct distance and checked in with customs and immigration. We’ll stay a few days then head back to West End Tortola where we’ll stay 2-3 nights basing some scuba diving out of that port.

Day 9 – Jost Van Dyke

First order of the day was to put more water onto the boat. This involved my having to back Gato Chateau into a tight dock. I felt impressed with my own efforts. It gets less difficult each time although I must allow myself no complacency. After taking on water, we motored then sailed over to Sandy Spit which is a tiny lump of sand with a couple of palm trees just off Jost Van Dyke.

After lunch we motored a few minutes to a nearby bay where we set off to find the “Bubbly Pool.” I had the location in my hand held GPS and, as often is the case, the “straight line” path actually took us the wrong way. At one point I managed to get my leg tangled up in some thorns that really didn’t want to let me go. heading back, we bumped into another couple who had sensibly asked for directions and knew the way. We soon found the “Bubbly Pool” only it wasn’t really bubbling. Seems we needed northerly swells to really make it go. Nevertheless, it was a pretty spot with a pool of water sheltered from the seas behind by a tumble of rocks with every now and then waves crashing over or through. That evening we popped around the corner to Little Bay where we stopped for the night. Helen cooked a stonking spaghetti bolognaise. A couple of bottles of wine and some beer were taken care of. Throughout today, Ben and Sam were somewhat fragile. No surprises as to why.

Day 9 – The Hangover

Yeah don’t drink a hell of a lot right before a day of sailing. Bad idea. I was just flopping around on deck, useless as an appendix. At least I slept a lot, and drank a lot of water. I was more or less sorted. Read a lot of my book “Confessions of a Dope Dealer” which is a fun read. Ate spaghetti bolognaise that night. More chilling and reading afterwards.

Day 8 – Full Moon Party

We motored right next door to Trellis Bay on Beef Island for the Full Moon Party. We pretty much chilled at our mooring for the day, preparing ourselves. Later in the evening we went to the party, and I had a fun/bad experience. Throughout the night i was hanging out with Ben and John and a couple other people that we met up with. But at the end, i had way too much to drink. Puked a godly amount, but it was totally worth it.

Day 8 – Trellis Bay, Full Moon Party

Not much voyaging today. We decided to forgo any interim stops today and headed over to Trellis Bay to secure a decent mooring in time for the evenings Full Moon Party. At the mooring in Trellis Bay we were greeted by a turtle. Not much to say about the daytime as it was spent mainly lazing about. The evening was fun with live music, stilt walkers and beach bonfires. Ben, Sam and John stayed late. Ben got very drunk and Sam ended up very sick.
