Today we signed the papers selling our home. That means we don’t have to show up on Friday for the signing. We have enough to do that day anyway, including picking up the check (cheque for Brits). Now there’s a result. I now have enough ironed shirts to last me through to my last day. Reminds me I was forced to change the password on my phone at work last week. Not going to have to do that again. Today was furniture moving. What fun it has been today. We decided on using Rent-A-Wreck to hire a truck. In hindsight I’m not sure that was the best decision as that was practically what we got. While I arrived early to pick up the truck it was a bit beaten up, disgustingly filthy and full of broken glass. There was no time to switch so I had to make do. It took 45 mins of cleaning to get the cabin barely respectable and to remove all the glass and filth. Driving the truck home I discovered the aircon pushed out hot air, the hand brake had gone off cruising and the rear mirrors were somewhat wobbly. Helen and I then fill the truck with furniture. We put the stuff in first that we intended to leave with our friends and finished off with the stuff we were taking to auction. We waited a little for Sam to get back from his psychology class then we headed off. When we got to the auction things went a bit more downhill. Upon seeing our furniture they said it wasn’t worth the effort to auction despite the fact they told us it was when viewing photographs. So with diminishing options we went round the corner to a storage facility and hired an upstairs 15×5 foot unit. While Helen did the paperwork, Sam and I filled the storage unit. The next problem turned out to be with the freight elevator which had failed. We ended up having to carry all the furniture up the stairs. Sam and I got a little sweaty doing this as it was now in the nineties and inside the metal storage facility it was like an oven. We looked forward to getting back to the facility office where there was a drinks machine. No surprise, the drinks machine was sold out. So off we went to take the remainder of our furniture (including my last solar panel) to our friends house. The GPS took us on an insane route through so many traffic lights, all of which appeared to go red as we got there. Filthy, sweaty and without an A/C we were desperately thirsty so as soon as week could find a shopping mall with a big car park we stopped to get a drink. Helen dashed into a whole foods shop and the only drinks she could get were not the usual sort. I chugged mine down as fast as I could before I could taste it. Lo and behold it was quite disgusting. We managed to drop of our remaining stuff and got it into our friends basement. We helped ourselves to iced water which was a blessed relief. The journey home was thankfully less eventful. We dropped off the truck and got home just in time for Sam to shower and head off to his work. Things are looking up on the investment side but by no means over. We can get a loan so we’ve made an offer on the place we’ve been recently looking at with a view to clearing it up and renting it out. Many obstacles remain here – this is not the first property we’ve made an offer on this year (and failed after many months). We shall see. Back home we’re still finding things and clearing up. Not much left now. Tonight we sleep on the floor. We’ll probably sleep quite well as we’re all exhausted. Phew – another busy weekend and it’s not yet over. Our older son, Ben, came to visit making this our last weekend back together in this house. On Saturday I cleaned the pool (for the last time) and mowed the lawn (for the last time). I also sorted out all of my tools finally determining which will go to St Martin, which we will take to BVIs and which we give to Ben and Sam. I also took a a van load of our stuff to charity – the earlier plan to give to the Vietnam Veterans was thwarted as they don’t pickup in our area. Helen spent Saturday cleaning the rooms we have emptied. Today I took Sam to Philadelphia where we looked at a second hand electric piano which we decided was ok and bought. Driving back I realized this would be the last time we’ll drive north on the NJ Turnpike for some time – another last. We had a bit of R&R this afternoon. I watched the German Grand Prix – congrats Hamilton for an excellent win and great entertainment. We also went to see the latest Batman movie which was brilliant. After the movie we dropped off a lot of furniture we’re giving Sam into Ben’s basement in lieu of finding Sam accomodation nearby. On the way home we stopped by to look at one possible place for Sam to rent. Tomorrow we’re hiring a truck (lorry) so we can take most of our remaining furniture to either auction or our friends. I’m hoping by the end of tomorrow we’ll have worked through all the questions pertaining to our potential purchase of a rental property. It all feels endless but the list of things to do and the number of things around us is getting smaller by the day. Next weelend will feel a breeze after everything to date. It won’t be all relaxing as I’ll be preparing my prized convertable for sale over the subsequent week. For the first time in about a month I got a serious twinge of excitement yesterday. Made me realize how long we’ve been slogging through the ‘getting there’ without feeling the thrill of the goal. Having got all excited I spent a little time plotting possible routes from the BVIs to the islands to the east. Won’t help us at all for 3 months but I do like looking at charts. In 10 days we will (hopefully) have closed on our house. This, perhaps, will be the end of the hardest part of our whole transition. Helen has been doing a fantastic job getting the house ready. We have to organize everything we have (had) into :
So in 10 days not only will we have sold the house, all this will be behind us. A bottle of something will be in order methinks. |
